I watched astounded as the baby store cashier rang in the one hundredth baby item for the very obvious expectant mommy at the checkout. As the cashier announced the final price for the merchandise, I noticed the pregnant girl's face go from an excited look to a 'wow, what have I done?' shock factor appearance.
She fumbled anxiously in her purse, seemingly hopeful that she could scrape up the necessary funds to cover the costs of this much too expensive, baby shopping trip. I heard her mother (who had obviously accompanied her on this exciting baby shop till you drop adventure) say, "Do you need me to spot you some money?", to which the embarrassed and annoyed reply came, "No, I am totally able to pay for my new baby's things!" The response was a quiet, "Are you sure you need all of these things? I don't remember needing this when you were a wee baby. But, if you think it is necessary, then it is up to you."
The expectant mom seemed to ignore her mom's comment, and looked just plain irritated by her mom's advice and elderly words of wisdom. But, in truth, I was thinking the same thing. Do we need that many baby essentials for the first year? Or, do we need more guidance from experts, and a thriftier approach to buying for baby?
Well, if you are an expectant mom or the proud mommy of a bundle of joy, you won't want to miss momstown's mama and baby program 'Baby Basics' designed for expecting and moms with babies 0-12 months. momstown is excited to have partnered with Walmart Canada for their Baby Essentials Session, as part of Walmart's Every Little Step Campaign!
This past week at Baby Basics we lead a discussion about all the Baby Essentials. What is REALLY needed? For each mom this picture looks a little different depending on her own personal parenting style.
Does she like one brand of diapers over another? Does she Cloth diaper?
Does she use formula or exclusively breastfed?
Does she use purees? What type of baby cloths and other items can she not live without?
There is no one answer to any of the above questions. What we do know that whatever products moms have on their list of essentials, they can find them at Walmart!
